UNH Women's Hockey

Cunningham Report Week 2

All in A Name
For those of you who weren't able to get down to Conte for the Thursday evening game against BC, the home team's announcer had apparently not been given a pronunciation guide for our 'Cats. She mispronounced a number of our player's last names, although how she got Raylen Dzeingelewski even close remains a mystery. One of the consitently botched renderings was Bellamy, which, much to our amusement, was spoken with the emphasis not on the first syllable, but the second, making it sound like the name of a deli product rhyming with salami. Knowing this makes the statement on the whiteboard in the Litter Box on Sunday a little more meaningful.
                                                                            My Bel-lamy has a first name - it's K - A - C - E - Y!
Brilliant!

Familiar Faces
UNH games, both home and away, provide the opportunity for fans, Friends, and  family to meet and socialize with people who might not otherwise cross their path. One familiar face who will not be seen at Vermont this Saturday is John Sisk, Sophomore forward, Shannon's dad. I'm not sure he's missed a game since Shannon first put on her # 8, but this weekend he will be returning to Wisconsin, and his high school alma mater, Marquette University High School, to be inducted into his school's Hall of Fame! For those of you who don't read the small print in the media guide, Shannon inherited her athleticism, as is evident in his bio:
John Sisk '59
John Sisk, a five letter winner, competed in football and track at the Junior Hilltop. He garnered All-Catholic honors in football on the 1958 squad. In track, he placed 3rd in the discus as a junior at the State Track Meet. As a senior and in his only year of running the hurdles, he won both the 120-yard high hurdles and the 180-yard low hurdles at the 1959 Wisconsin State Track Meet. Upon graduation from the University of Miami, he played DB for George Halas' Chicago Bears for two seasons. John and his father were the first Father & Son to play for the Chicago Bears in the history of the franchise.
Congratulations on a great honor. You certainly earned an excused absence from Vermont, and we'll look for you at the Whit when BC comes to town!

Hockey East Honors and beyond
Speaking of familiar faces, in an echo of the previous week's performance, Rookie Jenn Wakefield had a second two goal, one assist game, this time against BC, then picked up another assist in a 5 - 0 home victory against Maine. Sam Faber contributed a goal and an assist in each game. Their efforts were enough for both of them to retain Rookie of the Week and HE Top Performer status respectively for the second week in a row. Joining Sam as a Weekly Top Performer is Kaley Herman, who made several stellar saves enroute to a 4-1 win at BC. If I were picking, I'd have Leah Craig right up there in recognition of her 4 points (1g, 3 a) in two games. Congrats to Ms. Lucy on her 5 - 0 shutout against Maine, the third of her career, and Courtney Birchard for her first goal as a Wildcat! Kelly Paton and Michaela Long played well all week for the 'Cats, as did the Swiss Sisters. Shannon Sisk stepped seamlessly into the lineup with a solid game at wing on Sunday. There is no doubt this team is talented from one end of the roster to the other, and could all be singled out for their play!

Perilous Placement
Each year, the Division 1 field gets closer and closer. We see more teams breaking into the top 10, and others touching the top for the first time. Just a few weeks into the season, we've seen Wisconsin break our winning streak, only to have it snapped by SCSU, a team that has not cracked the top ten. Following a three point weekend against Mercyhurst, UMD ascended to the top spot, only to be swept by Minny the following weekend and drop to fourth in the nation, making way for UNH to move into the second spot. Although it's certainly a point of pride to hold those top spots, there is precious little room for error at that altitude! The season is still young, and as my housemate Trina, a former Wildcat, is quick to point out, "It's not how you start, it's how you finish!"  Lucky us to be able to watch such a dynamic race!

November Heat
The Hockey East schedule heats up quickly, as UNH hits the road to face BU on Thursday, November 1, and travels from the White Mountain State to the Green Mountain State to face off against Vermont on Saturday. Both of these teams are much improved, strong at home, and have brought some top teams to the edge of upset already this year. Without any baseball to divert attention and delay traffic, it's a quick trip to Walter Brown Arena to support your Wildcats! See you there!
