UNH Women's Hockey

Cunningham Report: Homecoming on Ice

A Fine Turnout
Saturday's Alumni Day, in celebration of 30+ years of Women's hockey at UNH, attracted a great number of alumni from all generations, many of whom took part in the games. Prior to the opening game, the original Club Members, and their Coach, Art Tuveson, were honored during on ice introductions. The Blue and White game between the older alumni took place just after the ceremony. Donna Martineau added yet another shutout to her career stats, as the White prevailed, 5 - 0.
The headline match up , between our younger alumni and the Northeatern Alumni followed, and for the second time that morning, White took the game by shutout, 4 - 0. Go 'Cats! Thanks to our fans for making the early trip out to support us. Our alumni game drew a bigger crowd than some of our opponents get when they play at home! Wildcat spirit endures!

We Can't Thank You Enough
A lot of work and preparation goes into the Alumni Day events, often by people behind the scenes. Gerry Beekman, as usual, did a fantastic job of coordinating the facility arrangements - no easy task with the women's game in the early afternoon, the men's team needing the Whitt for their pre-game skate and meal, and more than 50 alumni needing to be checked in, outfitted, and moved into and out of locker rooms on a tight schedule. Liz Blais, our Alumni Liason, brought an enthusiastic group back, while Bridget Stearns did the legwork on the Calder Memorial Plaque, which was presented in the locker room after the Alumni Game, as well as the Club Team photos and name plates. Thanks also to Mike Potenza, who spontaneously stepped in to lend a hand at check in. Brad Parkhurst and Doc Houston in the penalty box and goal judge seat, and John Devore doing the announcing, really made it feel like old times. Dave Ingram, Kot Engalichev, and Matt Dauphinais wore the stripes, and called a fair and friendly game! Thanks to all the Alumni for making the trip, especially the Club team members and coaches. A personal thanks to a few alumni, who know who you are, for making the trip despite schedule conflicts, to support me and all of Cheryl's teammates as we made the presentation.
Coach McCloskey - your hospitality, gracious welcome, and enthusiasm for the alumni make us really feel at home, and Coach Mc Curdy - where would we be without you?

Game, Set, Match
The alumni were treated to a scoring extravaganza in the afternoon, as our 'Cats beat the Huskies 8 - 2. A four goal first period set the tone for the rest of the game, as UNH outshot Northeastern 43  - 10. The three game series with Northeastern is now complete, with UNH outscoring NU on the year 18 - 2.

And The Award Goes To
Nine different 'Cats recorded points against Northeastern, with five of them potting goals. Kacey Bellamy got the game winner, her first of the season. Two goal, two assist games by both Jenn Wakefield and Micaela Long earned them Hockey East Weekly honors -  Jenn as Rookie of the Week, and Micaela as a Top Weekly Performer. Congrats to all our 'Cats on a decisive victory!

Mainiacs
Maine is a big state, and there is no doubting that when you make the 3.5 hour drive from Durham to Orono, just halfway up state, or down Maine, as they say. UNH has two games this weekend at Maine to round out another HE series as the 2007 - 2008 season winds down. Maine has rattled the 'Cats cage at Alfond before, and are fresh off a tie and close loss to BU, so UNH can't take either of these games lightly. Who wants to be surprised by a Black Bear? The Saturday game is at 7pm, not 2pm as printed on the early schedule. Sunday's opening face off is at 2pm. The roads should be traffic free on the way home, as most of New England will have found a spot in front of a television for the Superbowl.

Speaking of Winding Down
February is here, the days are getting longer, and Hockey East Playoffs are just a month away. The dates are Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2. Brittany Wilson's mother was kind enough to put together a list of accommodations in the UCONN area for those wanting to stay for the weekend. Thanks Liz!

Hey everyone,

Thought I would pass along some playoff information for those who are interested in regards to hotel accommodation's and tickets to the games.
On campus there is 1 hotel the Nathan Hale, from what I have been told there are very few rooms available at that time, many of the UConn teams are staying there due to spring break. It is also very expensive.
The next area to stay in is Manchester, it is about a 20 minute drive from campus with many hotels to stay at.
I have stayed at the following places all located just off the I-84 exits 63 or 64,

Super 8
Decent continental breakfast included with room.
860-643-1864

Holiday Inn Express
Decent continental breakfast included with room.
860-648-2000

Marriott Courtyard
Breakfast is extra however it is REALLY good. Cost is a little higher than the other 2.
860-533-8484

There is also a Quality Suites in the same area as these, I never stayed there however other parents that I know have and they have indicated that it is quite nice.
860-646-5700

From what I also understand there are other events happening around campus this same weekend also so if you need a place to stay book early. I have on occasion forgot to book early sometimes and wound up staying on the other side of Hartford, closer to Windsor.
As for the tickets, they will be available at the door if you want to purchase there,
TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE BY CALLING THE UCONN TICKET OFFICE AT 877-288-2666.

Hope this is helpful for any that need it,
Cheers and hope to see many there

I won't be heading north until Sunday, so for all who are making the trip, see you then, be safe, Go Pats, and Go 'Cats!
