UNH Women's Hockey

Cunningham Report: Skating in ski country

  Hi Friends,

Another week of Wildcat hockey is in the books, as UNH left Matthews Arena with a convincing 6 - 0 win over Northeastern, to remain undefeated in Hockey East play.

Not So Fast
One of the keys to UNH's success this year has been controlling the game from the opening faceoff. The Wildcats did that, outshooting the Huskies 11 - 0 in the first period, but could not put a puck by Freshman goalie Leah Sulyma. The game was half over before Sam Faber finally broke a 0 - 0 tie, and the 'Cats did not look back. Two goals by Sadie Wright-Ward, followed by one from Jenn Wakefield, gave UNH a solid lead. Kelly Paton topped off the scoring with a pair of goals. Way to finish, ladies!

Remarkable Helpers
Goaltender Kaley Herman picked up her first career point, as she assisted on Sam Faber's game winning goal. Ten different 'Cats added to their point totals. The two Jennifers picked up a pair of assists apiece, and Martine Garland had a point on the second Paton goal, moving the Wildcat Captain steadily toward the Century Club.

Speaking of Sam -  Faber Fire
There is a nice USA Hockey article about the Junior forward, who just returned from a successful Holiday Camp with Maggie Joyce and Kacey Bellamy. Click on the link to read the story.

To Hanover We Go
Next up for UNH is another mid-week road trip, this time to Thompson Arena in Hanover to play Dartmouth . The Big Green lost a few big guns to graduation, but is still playing tough, and in second place in  the ECACHL. They are 11 - 5 - 2 overall, with two of their losses to St. Lawrence, and one to Harvard. Like UNH, they split a pair with Mercyhurst. It's been a while since UNH has taken more than a point from Dartmouth, and it will be worth the travel to see it happen. Let's go BLUE!
If you can't make the trip through the scenic North Country to see the game, click on the link to watch the webcast. There is a monthly subscription charge of $7.95, but that's still cheaper than a movie!   UNH v Dartmouth

Hot Friars
Fresh off a split with Mercyhurst, Coach Deraney and his Friars will make the trip from Providence on Saturday, January 19, to play the first of three games against the Wildcats this season. This matchup has long been one of the best rivalries in Women's Hockey, as Providence handed UNH their first defeat ever. Game time is 2pm, and it's the first of only five home games in the second semester, so you won't want to miss it.

Not Ready to Retire
I spent this past weekend playing in a tournament in Conway, NH, with current teammates, and former Wildcats, Bridget Stearns and Dawne Lively. As I lined up to take a  faceoff in the third of four games in 2 1/2 days, I heard a familiar voice say,  "I had to pay my center five bucks for this faceoff." A quick look away from the referee's hand showed me that I was face to face with my UNH teammate of four years, Diane Langlais Gray. After our game, I stayed with a few friends to watch our favorite 50/50 peddler, Donna Nystrom Martineau, in net for the She Wolves. We stood behind her net ("We're all behind you, Donna") until she scooped a pile of snow onto her blade and threw it over the glass at us! Litterbox beware! At 7:40 Sunday morning, we faced off against Former 'Cats Jill Sikora and Bev Hagerman Lane. Win, lose, or tie, it's always fun to run into former Wildcats on the ice.

Speaking of Alumni
UNH Alumni - you have just over a week to dust off the equipment, finish up dry land training, and get ready to suit up for the Alumni Game, a Celebration of 30+ years of Women's Hockey at UNH. We will be honoring the women of the Club Years, without whose dedication the UNH program might not be what it is today.
With little to no budget, a few dedicated individuals supporting the group, and crazy ice times, these women laid the foundation for the winnigest team in Women's Collegiate Hockey.  Plan to be at the Whitt on January 26 at 9:30am (that may be a better ice time than some of the original Club members used to get!) to watch the game and meet some of the players who put UNH Women's Hockey on the path to distinction from Day 1.

A Whole Day of Huskies
Long time UNH opponent, the Northeastern Huskies, will be bringing a group of relatively recent grads to Durham that day to face off against some of our younger alums. This should add a little spice to the traditional Alumni Game format. The more seasoned alums, myself included, will face off against each other in a more recreationally paced game! The current Wildcats will then take on the current Huskies in a Hockey East matchup at 2pm. Stick around after the game for an Autograph Session with your UNH Wildcats!
